Integrated high-temperature dust removal and denitrification system: How metal filter cartridges protect SCR catalysts, extend their service life, and reduce space requirements
Release time:
Sep 16,2026
In non-power industries—such as cement, glass manufacturing, biomass processing, and metallurgy—flue gas is often characterized by a combination of "high temperature, high dust concentration, high alkalinity/sulfur content, and complex composition." When an SCR catalyst is directly exposed to such flue gas, pore clogging, alkali metal and heavy metal poisoning, and dust abrasion can all occur simultaneously—leading to shortened catalyst lifespan, increased system pressure drop, and persistently high operational and maintenance costs. Placing high-temperature dust removal upstream of the SCR system—using metal filter cartridges to reduce dust concentration to below 5 mg/Nm³ before proceeding to denitrification—is becoming an increasingly common practical approach for projects across various non-power industries.
I. Root cause of the issue: the properties of dust and the varying temperature ranges across different industries
Flue gas streams in non-power industries share two common characteristics, which mean that the layout experience derived from coal-fired power plants cannot be simply applied to these systems.
The dust characteristics are particularly severe. The dust concentration at the outlet of the cement kiln tail preheater can reach 80–120 g/Nm³, and this dust is rich in CaO as well as alkali metals such as K and Na; the dust generated in glass melting furnaces contains acidic components and is corrosive; biomass fly ash exhibits high viscosity and contains chlorides and heavy metals. This dust not only covers the active sites and causes erosion and wear of the catalyst channels but also, due to the alkali metals present, reacts with the V₂O₅ active component, leading to irreversible chemical poisoning; furthermore, CaO reacts with SO₃ in the flue gas to form CaSO₄, which coats the catalyst surface and causes physical blockage.
The temperature operating window is narrow, and this range varies significantly across different industries. In coal-fired power plants, the SCR system is installed upstream of the air preheater, where the flue gas temperature ranges approximately from 300–400°C – a range that naturally aligns with the catalyst's active operating window; however, the operating conditions in non-power industries vary widely: for example, the flue gas temperature at the cement kiln tail falls within the SCR temperature window, whereas in industries such as biomass and glass manufacturing, the temperature is significantly lower; in such cases, reheating the flue gas is required to bring it back into the catalyst's active operating range – each additional reheating step entails additional energy consumption.
II. Why should high-temperature dust removal be placed before the SCR?
Addressing the "number one killer" of catalysts: fly ash covers active sites, causes erosion and wear in reaction channels, and interacts synergistically with alkali metals, leading to a gradual monthly decline in denitrification efficiency. Reducing the dust concentration below 5 mg/Nm³ before feeding it into the SCR system effectively interrupts this degradation chain at its source.
Addressing clogging and pressure drop: High-concentration, viscous dust particles are highly prone to forming bridging deposits or compacting within the catalyst pores, which can cause a sharp increase in system resistance and elevate the load on the induced-draft fan. By implementing front-end dust removal, the catalyst can be selected with a higher pore density, significantly reducing its total volume and ensuring that the reactor resistance remains stable over the long term.
The conventional filter bags cannot be installed at higher temperatures. The maximum long-term operating temperature for conventional filter bags (e.g., PPS, P84, PTFE) is generally around 260 °C, making them unsuitable for installation in the high-temperature section preceding an SCR system; therefore, if dust removal is required in the high-temperature section, the filtration material must be replaced.
III. Why a metal filter cartridge?
Temperature-resistant cover for the SCR inlet window. The 316L alloy is suitable for long-term operation at temperatures ranging from 250–450 °C; the 310S alloy, along with special alloys such as iron-chromium-aluminum, can withstand even higher temperatures – precisely covering the SCR's inlet temperature range without the need for additional cooling.
High mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance. The metal matrix is a ductile material capable of withstanding significant temperature and load fluctuations; it is also less susceptible to brittle fracture even under frequent start-stop cycling, making it well-suited for applications in the non-electrical industry where operating conditions are inherently unstable.
Surface filtration + pulse back-blowing – outlet dust concentration can be consistently maintained below 5 mg/Nm³; supports online dust cleaning and regeneration; filter cartridges can be reused hundreds of times.
Rigid structure with long filter elements – prevents bag collapse or deformation and is capable of withstanding high negative pressure; a single unit can be spliced to extend beyond 6 meters, reducing the number of compartments and minimizing the height and footprint of the dust collector.
IV. Engineering Benefits Derived from Integration
Protective catalyst: dust and alkali metal poisoning are significantly reduced; the catalyst remains active throughout its designed service life, and its actual service life can be extended by 1–2 years (depending on operating conditions).
Stable voltage drop. Removal of CaO, alkali metals, and most fly ash from the front end disrupts the conditions that lead to dust compaction, ensuring long-term stable system resistance; as a result, the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) cleaning frequency and the downtime-related losses decrease accordingly.
By coupling dust removal with denitrification within a single storage bin, the need for a separately installed high-temperature dust collection bin and a large-scale SCR reactor is eliminated, reducing the total floor area required by 30%–50%.
Cost reduction: The reduced catalyst loading volume and lower replacement frequency result in a significantly lower total lifecycle cost compared to the "high-dust deployment + frequent catalyst replacement" approach.
V. Typical Layouts and Aiyipu Solution
Typical process flow: Process outlet → High-temperature metal filter cartridge dust removal (250–450 °C) → SCR reactor → Cleaned gas. Additionally, the high-temperature dust removal module can be integrated into the same chamber as the SCR reactor, further reducing space requirements and flue duct length.
Aiyipu (Shandong Aiyipu Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd.) provides design services and turnkey supply of metal filter cartridges and integrated denitrification systems, covering various operating conditions such as cement kilns, glass furnaces, biomass boilers, and metallurgical electric furnaces. Our engineers perform system condition diagnostics, filter material selection (316L / 310S / Iron-Chromium-Aluminum), and catalyst matching.
epilogue
The integration of high-temperature dust removal and denitrification does not simply involve combining two separate systems; instead, it deploys a metal filter cartridge as a "gatekeeper" – effectively blocking dust, alkali metals, and wear particles from entering the SCR unit, thereby enabling the catalyst to operate efficiently within a clean and stable flue gas environment. Aiyipu offers services including operating condition assessment, filter material and catalyst selection, and integrated system design. We welcome you to contact us for operational condition diagnostics and technical selection support.
