Top 5 Trends Shaping the SCR Catalyst Market in 2026

Release time:

Sep 01,2026

For more than two decades, coal-fired power plants anchored global demand for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts. That era is drawing to a close. As power-sector retrofits in mature markets near completion, the center of gravity in denitration is shifting — toward non-power industries, tougher flue-gas conditions, tighter space constraints, and a growing expectation that catalyst suppliers deliver lifecycle value rather than just cubic meters of honeycomb. Market researchers value the global SCR catalyst market at roughly USD 3.2 billion in 2025 and project steady growth of about 5–6% annually through the early 2030s, but the composition of that demand is changing faster than the headline number suggests. Here are the five trends we believe will define the SCR catalyst market in 2026 — and what they mean for buyers.

Trend 1: Non-Power Industries Become the Main Battlefield for NOx Control

In China, the world's largest SCR catalyst market, steel-sector ultra-low emission (ULE) retrofits are essentially complete: the China Iron and Steel Industry Association reports that more than 80% of crude steel capacity had met ULE requirements by the end of 2025. The policy frontier has moved on. Under the January 2024 guidelines from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), cement clinker capacity in key regions must reach 50% ULE completion by end-2025 and 80% nationwide by end-2028, with NOx capped at 50 mg/m³; coking follows a similar timetable. MEE has been explicit that SNCR alone cannot reliably meet the 50 mg/m³ NOx and 8 mg/m³ ammonia limits — SNCR+SCR combinations or standalone SCR are the recommended routes.

Europe is moving in the same direction: the revised Industrial Emissions Directive and updated BAT reference documents continue to tighten emission limits associated with NOx for cement, glass and metals production. In Russia and the CIS, the best-available-technologies framework under Federal Law 219-FZ now requires Category I industrial facilities to operate under Integrated Environmental Permits; 2025 brought a more-than-twofold tightening of the ambient NO₂ limit and higher pollution charges scheduled through 2030. Together, these push cement, glass, metallurgy and refining operators toward high-efficiency DeNOx.

The implication for catalyst demand is structural. Steel sintering, cement kilns, glass furnaces, coking batteries, waste incineration and biomass plants run dustier, more chemically aggressive flue gas than utility boilers, often with alkali metals, heavy metals and sticky particulates. Power-plant catalyst designs, copied wholesale, simply do not survive these conditions.

Trend 2: Integrated High-Temperature Dust Removal + DeNOx Moves Mainstream

The single biggest operational lesson from non-power retrofits is that catalyst life is decided upstream of the reactor. In high-dust flue gas, catalyst channels erode, plug with ash, and foul with alkali-rich deposits — the leading causes of premature deactivation in cement and glass applications.

The industry's response is integrated high-temperature dust removal and denitration: high-temperature ceramic filter elements or metal-fiber filters capture particulates at 300–400 °C and above, before the gas reaches the SCR catalyst. Catalyst-loaded ceramic filter elements can remove dust and reduce NOx in a single vessel. Field-proven systems report particulate emissions below 5 mg/Nm³ and DeNOx efficiency above 90–95%, with footprint reductions of 50% or more versus the conventional baghouse-plus-separate-SCR layout. The technology has been listed in China's National Advanced Pollution Prevention Technology Catalogue and is now standard consideration for glass furnaces, coking plants and waste-to-energy lines.

For catalyst manufacturers this is a convergence trend: the catalyst inside an integrated system sees clean, low-dust gas, which unlocks finer cell pitches, longer service life and tighter ammonia-slip control. AIREP's integrated high-temperature dust-removal-and-DeNOx technology is built around exactly this logic — protect the catalyst, and the economics of the entire system improve.

Trend 3: High-Cell-Density Catalysts (50/60 Cell) Gain Ground in Space-Constrained Applications

Conventional power-plant honeycombs use 18–25 cells across the module face, with thick walls built to resist fly-ash erosion. A growing segment of the market needs the opposite geometry: maximum active surface in minimum volume. High-cell-density catalysts — 50- and 60-cell configurations, within AIREP's 13–90 cell range — pack substantially more geometric surface area per cubic meter (roughly three times that of a standard 18-cell module), so a given NOx removal duty fits into a far smaller reactor.

That matters wherever space and weight are expensive: marine engine rooms meeting IMO Tier III limits, gas turbines, stationary internal combustion engines, distributed-energy CHP units, and brownfield retrofits with no room for a conventional SCR tower. Modular, high-open-area designs balance the surface-area gain against pressure drop, and shipowners in particular value the fuel-economy benefit of low backpressure.

There is one non-negotiable caveat: fine channels are unforgiving of dust. High-cell catalysts belong in low-dust gas — behind a high-efficiency filter (see Trend 2), in gas-turbine or engine exhaust, or in clean-gas positions. Specifying a 60-cell catalyst for raw cement-kiln gas is an expensive mistake. Cell count should always be selected against dust loading, allowable pressure drop and reactor geometry together.

Trend 4: Catalyst Regeneration and the Circular Economy Become Standard Practice

A deactivated SCR catalyst is not automatically scrap. Deactivation mechanisms — alkali and alkaline-earth poisoning, arsenic/lead/selenium contamination, ammonium bisulfate (ABS) plugging, sintering, abrasion and ash fouling — accumulate at different rates, and many are reversible. Regeneration via water or acid washing, ultrasonic cleaning and re-impregnation of active components typically restores 80–95% of fresh-catalyst activity at roughly 40–60% of the cost of new catalyst, while diverting material from hazardous-waste disposal (spent SCR catalysts are classified as hazardous waste in China and regulated similarly elsewhere).

Industry surveys suggest around a third of industrial operators now run catalyst recycling or reactivation programs, and regulators increasingly treat spent-catalyst management as part of circular-economy policy. The emerging standard is full-lifecycle management: periodic activity testing of installed layers → deactivation diagnosis (BET surface area, XRD phase analysis, SEM/EDS poison mapping) → regeneration-feasibility assessment → a regenerate-or-replace decision based on tested data rather than calendar age.

AIREP's role here is diagnostic and advisory. Our CNAS-accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) tests used catalyst for residual activity, poison loading and structural integrity, giving operators an independent basis for regeneration decisions. We help customers determine whether regeneration is technically viable — and we do not pretend every spent module is worth regenerating: severe sintering or structural damage is not reversible, and honest assessment is exactly where a trusted laboratory earns its keep.

Trend 5: Digital O&M and Intelligent Monitoring Reshape Lifecycle Management

Catalyst management used to mean replacing layers on a fixed schedule. It is becoming a data-driven discipline. Online monitoring of pressure drop, temperature fields, and SCR-inlet/outlet NOx and ammonia slip feeds catalyst-life models that track deactivation in near real time. AI- and LSTM-based diagnostic systems now flag channel plugging and activity decay before emissions drift, and digital-twin SCR reactors optimize NH₃/NOx molar ratios to hold NOx performance while minimizing ammonia slip and downstream ABS formation. Industry analysts report that over 40% of utility operators have already added digital emission-monitoring upgrades, with measured improvements in NOx control efficiency.

For buyers, the shift is from "buy catalyst every few years" to "secure guaranteed performance over a lifecycle." Suppliers that can interpret operating data, predict replacement timing and tune ammonia-injection strategies become partners rather than vendors. Expect digital condition monitoring to be a standard requirement in 2026 catalyst tenders — especially for multi-site operators managing dozens of reactors across cement, steel and power portfolios.

What These Trends Mean for Buyers

Five trends, one message: catalyst selection in 2026 is a system-level, lifecycle decision, not a line-item purchase. Practical recommendations:

  1. Match the catalyst system to your actual flue gas. Temperature window, dust loading, sulfur content and poisons (alkali metals, arsenic, phosphorus) should drive formulation and cell count — not the supplier's standard catalog. AIREP's portfolio covers the full 160–600 °C range with medium-temperature V₂O₅-WO₃(MoO₃)/TiO₂, low-temperature Mn-Ce and high-temperature Fe/Cu-zeolite systems, none using precious metals.
  2. Engineer dust management first. For high-dust non-power applications, evaluate integrated high-temperature dust removal + DeNOx before sizing the catalyst. Cleaner gas means finer cells, longer life and lower total cost.
  3. Demand accredited test data. Require performance and characterization data from a CNAS/ISO 17025-accredited laboratory for incoming batches, plus periodic tested activity data for installed layers. Self-declared datasheets are not a basis for multi-year decisions.
  4. Buy lifecycle cost, not unit price. Factor in regeneration feasibility, expected service life under your dust and poison profile, pressure-drop energy cost and digital monitoring capability. A catalyst that costs 10% more but lasts 30% longer wins.
  5. Qualify suppliers on integration depth. The strongest partners supply catalyst across temperature ranges and cell densities (AIREP: 13–90 cells), understand dust-removal integration, operate accredited testing, and hold a non-power project track record. Founded in 2012 in Zibo, Shandong, AIREP is a national high-tech and specialized "Little Giant" enterprise with 50+ patents and has delivered 2,000+ denitration projects for 500+ enterprises across cement, glass, steel, coking, chemicals, marine engines, gas turbines, distributed energy and waste incineration.

Stay Ahead in 2026

The SCR catalyst market in 2026 rewards buyers who think in systems and lifecycles: non-power flue-gas challenges, integrated process design, high-density geometry, circular material loops and data-driven operations.
