Calculation Method and Applicable Range for Space Velocity (SV) of SCR Catalysts | AiYipu
Release time:
Sep 28,2026
Abstract: The space velocity (SV) refers to the volumetric flow rate of standard wet-basis flue gas per cubic meter of catalyst per hour, expressed in h⁻¹, and is calculated as the flue gas flow rate divided by the catalyst bed volume. It is the primary design parameter for SCR systems: a lower SV corresponds to higher denitrification efficiency, but also to increased catalyst consumption (and associated costs). For coal-fired operations under high dust loading conditions, typical SV values range from 3,000–5,000 h⁻¹; for clean flue gases from gas turbines and similar sources, SV ranges from 4,000–7,000 h⁻¹. In low-temperature operating conditions, conservative lower values should be adopted, and compliance with regulatory requirements should be verified using the kinetic efficiency at the end of catalyst life (KEOL).
I. What is Specific Velocity (SV): Definition and Calculation Formula
Space velocity (SV) is the key parameter for assessing the contact intensity between flue gas and the catalyst; it represents the volumetric flow rate of flue gas passing through a unit volume of catalyst per unit time.
Definition of the space velocity of an SCR catalyst: the volume flow rate of standard wet-basis flue gas per cubic meter of catalyst per hour, expressed in h⁻¹.
SV (h⁻¹) = Standard wet-basis flue gas flow rate (Nm³/h) ÷ catalyst bed volume (m³)
Example: For a denitrification unit with a flue gas flow rate of 40,000 Nm³/h and a catalyst bed volume of 10 m³, the SV is calculated as SV = 4,000 h⁻¹.
Note: The denominator in the formula is the catalyst bed volume, not the reactor volume. When comparing the space velocities of the solutions proposed by the two suppliers, it is essential to first verify that the pipe diameters are identical; otherwise, the results will not be comparable.
II. Why the space velocity is the primary design parameter for SCR systems?
The space velocity directly affects the residence time of flue gas within the catalyst: the lower the SV, the longer the residence time, leading to more complete reactions between NOx and ammonia, thereby increasing denitrification efficiency; conversely, the higher the SV, the shorter the residence time, resulting in decreased efficiency and increased ammonia slip.
However, a lower SV is not necessarily better—reducing the space velocity further increases the catalyst dosage, leading to higher equipment costs and greater system pressure drop. Therefore, determining the appropriate space velocity essentially involves finding a balance between ensuring operational efficiency and minimizing investment costs: achieving stable compliance as a prerequisite, while minimizing catalyst usage as much as possible.
III. Engineering Example: Space Velocity Calculation for Hazardous Waste Incineration Project
Take the SCR project for hazardous waste incineration at Aiyipu Environmental Protection as an example:
- Flue gas flow rate: 30,000–56,000 Nm³/h (varies with load)
- Catalyst: 40-hole honeycomb catalyst, with a packing volume of 9.72 m³, arranged in two layers
Low load: 30,000 ÷ 9.72 ≈ 3,100 h⁻¹
High loading rate: 56,000 ÷ 9.72 ≈ 5,800 h⁻¹
Note: The flue gas composition from hazardous waste incineration is complex, and its flow rate exhibits significant fluctuations. During design, the upper limit of the space velocity shall be verified based on the maximum flue gas flow rate to ensure that sufficient denitrification efficiency margin remains in the high-load regime; concurrently, the active temperature window shall be verified based on the minimum flue gas temperature.
IV. Range of Air Velocity Values for Typical Application Scenarios
application scenarios | Typical free-stream velocity values | Key Design Considerations |
SCR for coal-fired power plants with high dust emissions | 3,000–5,000 h⁻¹ | The design of the dust collection system should balance dust accumulation prevention with wear resistance, and the number of holes should not be excessive. |
Gas turbine / Internal combustion engine (clean flue gas) | 4,000–7,000 h⁻¹ | The flue gas is clean, allowing for the use of higher gas velocities to reduce the catalyst dosage. |
Low-temperature (150–250°C) or high-reliability applications | Use the conservative lower value | Given the small active margin, design shall be based on the active capacity at the end of service life (KEOL = K0 × Kr). |
V. Design based on end-of-life activity (KEOL)
During operation, catalysts may gradually become deactivated due to factors such as alkali metal poisoning, sintering, abrasion, and ash accumulation. If the catalyst selection were based solely on the activity of a new catalyst, emissions could easily fail to meet regulatory limits—or even exceed them—within one to two years of commissioning. In engineering practice, the standard approach is to conduct a final-activity verification at the end of the catalyst's service life:
KEOL = K0 × Kr
In this equation, K₀ represents the initial activity, and Kᵣ denotes the residual activity coefficient. For example, assuming an operating hours of 24,000, Kᵣ may be set to 0.75, implying that the catalyst retains 75% of its initial activity at the end of its service life. The catalyst selection calculation should be based on whether Kₑᴬᴬ can continuously meet the emission limits, rather than on the activity data of a newly purchased catalyst.
VI. More Refined Design: K/AV Method
η = 1 - exp(-K/AV)
In this equation, K denotes the catalyst activity constant (m/h), AV denotes the areal velocity (m/h), and η denotes the denitrification efficiency. The K/AV method replaces the volumetric space velocity with areal velocity, thereby better reflecting the fundamental principle that "the reaction occurs on the catalyst surface." This approach is particularly suitable for two scenarios: first, for advanced denitrification projects with stringent efficiency requirements (e.g., where very low outlet NOx levels are mandated); and second, for comparative evaluations of catalyst products from different manufacturers.
Key Points
- Gas velocity SV = standard wet-basis flue gas flow rate ÷ catalyst bed volume, expressed in h⁻¹; it represents the volume flow rate of flue gas per cubic meter of catalyst per hour.
- SV is the primary parameter in SCR design: a lower SV value results in higher efficiency but higher capital costs; the selection of SV essentially represents a trade-off between efficiency and investment.
- Typical values: for coal-fired plants with high dust loads, 3,000–5,000 h⁻¹; for gas turbines/internal combustion engines with clean flue gas, 4,000–7,000 h⁻¹; for low-temperature operating conditions, adopt a conservative lower value.
- Catalyst selection must be verified against the end-of-life activity KEOL = K₀ × Kᵣ (e.g., for 24,000 h, use Kᵣ = 0.75), rather than based on the activity of a new catalyst.
- The fine design employs the K/AV method: η = 1-exp(-K/AV), whereby the required fill volume is derived from the target efficiency.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ, optionally paired with an FAQ Schema)
Q: Is it always better to have a lower free-fall velocity?
Answer: No. The lower the space velocity, the greater the efficiency margin; however, this also leads to a simultaneous increase in catalyst dosage, system cost, and system pressure drop. The appropriate approach is to determine the optimal space velocity by working backward from the target denitrification efficiency, flue gas characteristics, and catalyst activity at the end of its service life—rather than simply minimizing the space velocity.
Q: When calculating the free velocity, should the flue gas flow rate be based on a wet basis or a dry basis? And should it be based on standard conditions or operating conditions?
Answer: The standard wet-basis flue gas flow rate (Nm³/h) should be used, ensuring consistency with the catalyst's design specifications. Using the operating condition flow rate will overestimate the space velocity, while using the dry-basis flow rate will underestimate the space velocity; both scenarios can lead to deviations in the design of the catalyst bed loading capacity.
Q: For projects with significant fluctuations in flue gas flow rate (e.g., hazardous waste incineration), what air velocity should be used for verification?
Answer: Verify the upper limit of the air velocity based on the maximum flue gas flow rate to ensure that the efficiency in the high-load region still maintains an adequate margin; simultaneously, verify the active temperature window based on the minimum flue gas temperature.
Q: What does Kr = 0.75 (24,000 h) mean, and how should it be used?
Answer: This refers to the percentage of initial activity retained by the catalyst after 24,000 hours of operation, i.e., 75%. During catalyst selection, the condition that KEOL = K₀ × 0.75 is used to assess whether emission levels can continue to meet regulatory standards, thereby incorporating a design margin for service life performance.
