Introduction: When your denitrification system experiences an "unexplained" decline in efficiency or when the catalyst fails prematurely, have you ever considered that the problem might not lie in the ammonia nitrogen ratio, temperature, or dust, but rather in a frequently overlooked trace contaminant: selenium dioxide (SeO₂)? This article will introduce you to this "invisible killer" of denitrification catalysts and provide practical solutions to address the issue.
I. Introduction: An Easily Overlooked Issue
At the site of a denitrification project involving an iron and steel sintering machine, it is common to encounter the following scenario: during the initial commissioning phase, the SCR system demonstrates excellent efficiency (above 95%); however, after operating for a period of time, the catalyst activity declines significantly, ammonia slip increases, and the denitrification efficiency falls below the design specification. After thorough investigation of factors such as ammonia injection, temperature, flow field, and dust levels, no cause could be identified – the problem may lie in an inconspicuous trace element present in the flue gas: selenium (Se).
Selenium is located in the same group as arsenic (As) in the periodic table and shares similar chemical properties with it. While arsenic poisoning is widely recognized as the "catalyst killer" in the denitrification field, selenium poisoning represents a unique—and often overlooked—threat specific to the steel sintering industry.
II. Where does SeO₂ come from?

Steel sintering is one of the significant industrial sources of selenium emissions:
-Iron ore and sintering feedstocks (including coke powder, returned ore, and fluxes) often contain selenium.
During the sintering process, the material layer temperature reaches 1300–1400°C, where selenium is oxidized to gaseous selenium dioxide (SeO₂) at these high temperatures.
-SeO₂ enters the denitrification system along with the sintering flue gas, acting as an "invisible toxin" for the catalyst.
Key data: The sublimation point of SeO₂ is approximately 315°C, whereas the typical operating temperature range for SCR denitrification in sintering plants is 250–350°C – these ranges overlap significantly, which is the root cause of the frequent occurrence of selenium poisoning.
III. How does SeO₂ "kill" the catalyst?

The degradation mechanism of SeO₂ on the SCR catalyst (V₂O₅–WO₃/TiO₂) is analogous to that of arsenic poisoning and can be primarily attributed to three pathways:
1⃣ Physical deposition and pore plugging (the most direct hazard)
-SeO₂ exists in the flue gas as a gaseous substance; once the temperature falls below the dew point, it condenses and deposits on the catalyst surface and within its pores.
-Long-term accumulation leads to micropore clogging and reduced specific surface area, resulting in decreased catalyst activity and increased pressure drop.
2⃣ Chemical poisoning (irreversible inactivation)
SeO₂ is an acidic oxide that reacts with the catalytic active component V₂O₅/WO₃.
-Forms stable selenites/selenides* that occupy the active site
-Compared to the passivation caused by alkali metals or phosphorus, selenium poisoning is usually irreversible and extremely difficult to reverse.
3⃣ Synergistic toxicity (worsening the situation)
Sintering flue gas often contains both alkali metals (e.g., Na, K) and SO₂/SO₃ simultaneously.
-SeO₂ interacts synergistically with alkali metals and sulfides, further accelerating the degradation of the active surface.
> Mechanism Summary: SeO₂ sublimes at approximately 315°C → condenses and deposits → reacts with active components to form stable selenites → micropore blockage + occupation of active sites → irreversible catalyst deactivation.
IV. Quantitative Assessment of the Impact of SeO₂
To assist engineers in conducting quantitative assessments, we have compiled the key parameters for SeO₂ poisoning as follows (for design reference only; actual measurements shall prevail):
| Parameter | Reference Value | Description |
| SeO₂ sublimation point | Approx. 315°C | Peak toxicity temperature range |
| Typical sintering flue gas temperature | 250–350°C | Coincides with the SeO₂ deposition peak |
| Toxicity rate constant k_Se | 8×10⁻⁷ ~ 2×10⁻⁶ | Increases with rising temperature (similar to As) |
| Affected Catalyst | V₂O₅–WO₃/TiO₂ honeycomb structure – most sensitive | Molecular sieves exhibit greater resistance to selenium |
Real-world impact: When the selenium concentration in the flue gas is high, the catalyst's chemical service life may be reduced from the designed 24,000 hours to as few as several thousand hours, leading to frequent replacement, soaring costs, and significant pressure to comply with environmental regulations.
V. Response Strategy: End-to-End Governance Across the Entire Supply Chain – From Source to Catalyst
Source Control (Most Effective – Highly Recommended)
1. Activated carbon injection + Baghouse filtration: Activated carbon is injected upstream of the SCR system to adsorb gaseous SeO₂, which is then removed by the dust collector (the most mature solution for sintering or coal-fired applications).
2. Synergistic Desulfurization and Deseleniumization: Wet desulfurization enables the partial capture of SeO₂ alongside SO₂ removal.
3. Raw Material Control: Preferentially use low-selenium iron ore or sintered raw materials to reduce selenium input at the source.
> ⚠ Key: Deseleniumization measures must be installed upstream of the SCR; otherwise, SeO₂ will still reach the catalyst.
Catalyst Level (Core Technology)
1. Selenium-based Catalyst Formula:
-Increase the WO₃/MoO₃ content: preferentially react with Se to provide sacrificial protection for V.
-Use of a large-pore carrier: reduces the deposition and clogging of SeO₂ within micropores.
2. "Sacrificial Layer" Catalyst Design (Highly Recommended):
-The front-end system employs a sacrificial catalyst – characterized by relatively low resistance to poisoning and low cost – to initially "absorb" SeO₂-induced poisoning.
-The backend is equipped with a high-performance main catalyst to ensure denitrification efficiency.
-The sacrificial layer should be replaced periodically to protect the expensive main catalyst.
3. Catalytic Dosage and Safety Margin Design:
-Account for the active attenuation caused by Se poisoning during calculations; increase the catalyst volume margin
-Scientifically reserved poisoning decay margin to extend the overall catalyst lifespan
Performance Optimization
1. Temperature control: Avoid the SeO₂ deposition peak region around 315°C as much as possible.
2. Regular soot blowing: Sintering flue gases contain high levels of dust; regular acoustic or steam soot blowing should be performed to reduce the accumulation of SeO₂ and dust on the catalyst surface.
3. Online Monitoring: Regularly sample and analyze the Se content in the catalyst to establish a poisoning trend curve, thereby **predicting the catalyst's service life and preventing passive shutdowns.
Regenerative Remediation
-In cases of severe Se poisoning, alkaline solution/water rinsing for regeneration may be attempted (similar to the regeneration method used for As poisoning).
-However, the already established stable selenites are difficult to restore, and the regenerative effect is limited; therefore, prevention is paramount.
VI. Several Recommendations for the Owner of the Sintering Denitrification Project
1. Prioritize flue gas composition analysis: During the project's preliminary phase, it is essential to measure the Se concentration in the flue gas directly; do not rely solely on conventional parameters such as NOx, SO₂, or particulate matter.
2. Select catalysts with "poison resistance" : For flue gases containing selenium, prioritize the use of catalysts with a selenium-resistant formulation combined with a sacrificial layer design.
3. Reserve poisoning margin: The catalyst design capacity should account for sufficient room to accommodate Se poisoning-induced deactivation.
4. Establish an early warning mechanism: Monitor the Se content in the catalyst during operation to achieve "early detection and early response".
VII. Conclusion
Selenium dioxide (SeO₂) represents a hidden yet threat in steel sintering denitrification projects. Its hazards are no less severe than those of arsenic poisoning, yet it is often overlooked. Only by adopting a four-pronged approach—removing selenium at the source, selecting selenium-resistant catalysts, scientifically designing safety margins, and strengthening operational monitoring—can the denitrification system maintain long-term, stable compliance with regulatory requirements, thereby safeguarding the enterprise's environmental compliance obligations and operational costs.
Denitration catalyst technology has never been as simple as just "installing it." Only by understanding every "invisible threat" present in the flue gas can we develop designs that stand the test of time.
